Stellated Octahedron
The sculptural object shown is actually a sound object. The geometric figure is pure, made of solid wood and devoid of any technological devices; Vibrant, it transmits sound uniquely thanks to its physical and geometric characteristics. Silent when taken individually, it begins to resonate once in contact with a vibration source transmitted from the pedestal.
The latter contains the technological device used to play music from devices via Bluetooth, cable, or Wi-Fi. The base, without the structure, would lose its amplification, and low-volume sounds could be heard (like those of a turntable not connected to the system). The effect is similar to that of a tuning fork, whose sound is amplified by the surface (or structure) on which it rests.
The choice of a harmonic (and not random) geometry as a means of diffusion is made to better study and observe how the geometry of sound frequencies interacts with the geometry of form. Specifically, it is a structure studied and used in art and mathematics for its harmonic properties. From Kepler, to Leonardo da Vinci, to Luca Pacioli, and more recently to Escher. The choice is due to its self-dual and multiple geometric (and sonic) properties that encapsulate several harmonic polyhedra in one, allowing sound to find numerous geometries to interact with. The solid offers different geometric interpretations depending on the point of view; it can be an octagonal star, an augmented octahedron, two tetrahedra intersecting at their centroid, or a cube whose faces are X-shaped. Visually, it is necessary to change perspective to appreciate its characteristics, an exercise that also serves to reinterpret sound through this type of experience.
The structure resonates with any music and sound, giving its own spatial interpretation. Each frequency, taken individually, is static at the point of maximum resonance of the structure. The set of frequencies that make up a piece of music are in motion with the variation of the music. The spatialization translates into a natural effect and the expression of the physical phenomenon. The project does not consist of imposing a sound spatialization, but in discovering how this occurs as a phenomenon with the variation of the shape and material investigated.
